Glide Boy Scouts help needy families during holidays

A troop of Boys Scouts in Glide helped make Christmas better for many families in that area.

Troop 112 of Glide has developed a network of programs to collect thousands of pounds of food and distribute it themselves.

The scouts were out Saturday morning with volunteers from the community, boxing up the food, that they had purchased with community donations.

The boxes were loaded up and taken to the homes of those in need.

"We deliver everything to every family. We're separated into little groups and we're scattered all around Glide," said Lars Hughes, the Senior Patrol Leader.

Scout leader Stu Carlson says they got quite a bit more cash donations this year, despite the harder times. "It's a wonderful thing, we know that the economy is down quite a bit this year. But this year, everybody knew it was a little bit on the downside and everybody actually gave more this year. It's an incredible thing and we're thankful for all the efforts of everybody that participated."

Carlson says they delivered the Christmas baskets to 146 families in the Glide area, with turkey and all the trimmings, and even presents for the kids in the families.

This is the 23rd year the Scouts have worked with other organizations in the community to provide holiday food baskets for the needy.
