Dogs and their owners showed off their talents Sunday in the first Animal Idol in Roseburg.

The winner was a Siberian Husky owned by Robin and Greg Kovach. All three performed a howling routine.

The event was to raise money for a new animal shelter, and dozens of dogs of all shapes and sizes, and all different kinds of talent were there to show what they could do.

The dogs were judged by a panel of three judges, just like American Idol. They were looking for the most glamorous, talented and best costumes.

Ellis Poole from the Saving Grace Animal shelter said, "We came up with the Animal Idol because of, actually American Idol. The event was to bring awareness to our building campaign, and a celebration of the monies that we have raised. We are right at one million dollars as of today's date.

A couple from Eugene, Jeff and Gail Lang brought their dog, 4-year-old Gracie, who's performed on the Jay Leno show. She put on an exhibition for the crowd, including making a few baskets for the ducks.

About 500 people showed up for the event, and Poole says its was much bigger than he'd even hoped for.

Saving Grace Animal Shelter is trying to replace their 60-year-old facility, that they say is too small and deteriorating.
