Wrong way driver kills two

ROSEBURG - A wrong way driver Sunday morning caused a tragedy just south of Roseburg on Interstate-5.

Oregon State Police say two people died and another was seriously injured when a wrong way driver crashed into another vehicle, heading northbound in the southbound lanes just after 3:00 a.m. Sunday morning.

The driver of a white 2002 Pontiac Grand Am that was going northbound was 40-year-old Cheryl Rowe of Albany. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A a passenger in a 2008 Hyundai Elantra, 20-year-old Chanthea Prak of Fresno, California, also died at the scene. Police say she was eight months pregnant, and was a member of the U.S. Army stationed in Fort Lewis, Washington.

The driver of the Hyundai, 21-year-old Andrew Cajita of San Mateo, California, was seriously injured and transported to Mercy Medical Center, then Life-flighted to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland. He was listed in critical condition Sunday afternoon.

Southbound lanes of I-5 were closed for about four hours, and vehicles were detoured around the crash until the investigation was completed.

Witnesses told police they saw the vehicle get on the freeway going the wrong direction at milepost 113, and the crash happened about four miles north of there.

Investigators are still trying to determine what factors were involved in the crash.
