ROSEBURG - People lined up early outside Stewart Robertson Memorial Gymnasium for a chance to get inside to see the former President Bill Clinton, who was in town campaigning for his wife Hillary.

Clinton spoke to a full house estimated at near 2,000 people at Roseburg High School, and he told the crowd that their vote does matter, especially this year.

"First, it is one inevitable rule of politics, when somebody who is not for a certain result tells you that, it means they're afraid your vote will matter and and the race is not over," said Clinton.

There were many Clinton supporters at the event, and others who just wanted to see the former President in person.

"I thought it was really cool that I got to see the former president of the United States, it was really inspirational and I think Hillary's got my vote," said Laurie Carpenter.

Roseburg High Principal Karen Goirgolzarri said it was a good education for the students to see national politics in action. "The interest was obviously fairly high to see a former U.S. president. I think it's quite an experience, and for them to get a glimpse of what national politics might be like."

For one Roseburg teacher who was asked to sing the national anthem, it was a thrill. "It was really an honor, it was very exciting. It was very last minute. Larry Rich asked me yesterday morning, and got to shake his hand backstage. It was really an honor," said Donna Spicer, an English teacher at the high school.

The Roseburg Police Department and Douglas County Sheriff's Office were called on to help the Secret Service and Oregon State Police with the security for the event. For the Roseburg Police, it took a lot of resources.

"We actually got pretty lucky because we were able to draw from the Sheriff's office, from the State Police, and from our own ranks," said Sgt. Aaron Dunbar of the Roseburg Police Department. " We had school resource officers, motor officers."

Clinton headed to Grants Pass and Klamath Falls after leaving Roseburg Tuesday morning.
