Central Oregon & Pacific to abandon rail line

Central Oregon & Pacific to abandon rail line

By Dan Bain

Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad said Monday it will ask for authority to abandon its coastal rail line between Eugene to Coquille.

CORP responded Monday, to a federal Surface Transportation Board order concerning the embargo of CORP's rail line between Coquille and Eugene.

CORP's response documents concerns about the safety of three tunnels on the line forced the embargo and that seasonal weather conditions in Oregon delayed the start of necessary tunnel repairs.

CORP attempted to get interested stakeholders to participate in the cost of repairing the line, but they failed to get support.

On April 10th, the STB ordered CORP to show why it should not be required to either promptly repair the tunnels on the line and resume rail service or to seek abandonment authority.

CORP officials said given that the substantial capital investment required to complete the repairs cannot be economically justified, the railroad has initiated the process of seeking authority to abandon the line.

CORP is a RailAmerica, Inc. Property, with a 440 mile railroad in southwest Oregon and northern California.
