REEDSPORT - While most fire associations in Northern California are tied up saving homes and structures in this week's wildfires, several local employees from a mill company are trying to save the timberlands.

That's why, on Tuesday, Roseburg Forest Products in the Reedsport office sent three, 4,000 gallon water trucks, along with 12 forestry staff members and six truck drivers, down to protect 300,000 acres of land near Weed, California.

So far, Chief Forrester Mark Wall says, they're working on three fires on their property as well as multiple fires in outside areas.

Normally protected by the California Department of Forestry, he says, they're basically on their own.

"All of our staff is trained to fight fires," says Wall. "We have various levels of qualifications. We take fire protection very seriously on our timberlands. We need to be prepared to step in with the state to protect our land."

In addition to their employees, Wall adds, 60 contractors out of Coos Bay, are also assisting with the fire.

This marks the first time they've sent people from Oregon to help with a fire, indicating just how bad the situation is there.
