Democratic US Senator Ron Wyden or Oregon says he has sent a letter along with 20 senate colleagues, to the Senate Appropriations committee chairman and ranking member, highlighting the broad support for a 4-year extension of the County Payments legislation, which could mean millions of dollars for Douglas County and other timber dependent western Oregon counties..

Wyden said county governments are in limbo and unable to fund vital services like police, fire, or education.

He said the letter is a powerful statement of support for the lifeline that the counties need. The letter requests that the county payments funding be included in an upcoming emergency supplemental appropriations bill.

Earlier this year, a 1-year extension of the law was included in an emergency domestic spending bill, which passed the full Senate, 75-22, enough to prevent a veto, but it was not accepted by the House of Representatives.

Commissioner Doug Robertson said today, the county is very supportive of Senator Wyden's efforts and he is cautiously optimistic that a multi-year bill will pass.
