Volosin to plead against attorney's advice

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- The man who eluded police for several weeks after a chase in the Green District appeared in court Wednesday morning and said he has decided to plead to the charges against him.
Karl Volosin, 28, was arrested in late December after he jumped in the South Umpqua River in Green and after a 45 minute chase was taken into custody. Volosin faces numerous charges, including failure to report as a sex offender, attempt to elude, reckless driving, tampering with a witness and possession of a weapon while an inmate, among others. Judge George Ambrosini set a hearing for Aug. 4 at 1 p.m. for the plea and sentencing. Volosin refused an attorney when he was in court earlier this month, but Wednesday he was represented by Ken Madison, who advised him against pleading guilty to the charges. Police say Volosin is a predatory sex offender who was wanted on several local warrants related to incidents in July of last year, when they say he assaulted a man and got away after a vehicle pursuit. |
