Douglas County commissioners were hailing the US Senate vote that passed the Secure Rural Schools Act overwhelmingly, but that optimism was dampened Wednesday.

Commissioner Doug Robertson said Wednesday, that the House took out the county payments legislation from their version of the spending bill. But he said because of the support in the Senate, a 93-2 vote, they are hopeful that will have a big impact when the bills are consolidated.

"The democratic leadership in the House is now in control of all of these bills, and in all likelihood they will all go back to the Senate, maybe as early as tomorrow, and there will be continued dialog. Its just simply up in the air at this time. "

The Senate version of the bill is a 4-year extension of the safety net.

The county has been operating without a safety net since the first of July, and will lose about 50 million dollars each year without the federal funding.

Robertson says they have indications that the leadership of the Senate will reinstate the legislation when the bill comes back to them, and they're hopeful that the strong vote in the Senate Tuesday will help them get the bill through the House.
