Hundreds of volunteers were honored Monday, for the thousands of hours they contribute each year in Douglas County.

It was the Douglas County volunteer services recognition luncheon, and the volunteers were treated to lunch serviced by policemen, firemen, city and county officials.

A symbolic check for almost 88 million dollars, representing the monetary value of the hours that have been donated, was presented to county commissioner Joe Laurance.

Norm Smith of the Ford Family Foundation was the featured speaker, and he told the volunteers their time is very valuable.

"I want you to think about that time that you're giving to me and to you, for you and for me, is this marvelous benefit that has great value."

Beverly Paulson was honored by the corporation for national and community service, for her many years as volunteer and organizer of volunteers in Douglas County.

"And when I think of being in on the ground floor of R.S.V.P., and I see where it has become 35 years later, is utmost gratification."

More than 700 volunteers attended the event, representing more than 200,000 volunteer hours.

The event is hosted by the Volunteer Foundation of Douglas County, which helps support the foster grandparent program, the retired & senior volunteer program and the senior companion program.
