Veteran's home to possibly locate in Roseburg
By KPIC Web StaffDouglas County commissioners have given their support to a proposal to bring a 200 bed veterans home to Roseburg. The proposed home would be located on the existing VA Medical Center property. The Department of Veterans Affairs still has to approve the site, but local officials say this would be a logical choice. County officials say it would bring jobs and significant revenue to the area. Mary Newman of the Douglas County Veterans Services says they need to find 35% matching funds. "The land is turned over to the state, the veterans home is built on that land with matched funds. 65% of the funding comes from the federal VA, and 35% comes from local community or state funds. Once its built, the state runs it." Commissioner Joe Laurance says he's excited about the possibility of having the home in Roseburg. "This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize the service of our veterans, this is one of those elusive win-win situations I believe, where this community stands to gain a great deal." The projects would cost about 45 million dollars, and state and local governments would have to come up with about 14 million of that. Commissioners, in signing the resolution, agree to help identify funding for the 35% match. Newman says there are some other locations in the state that are being considered, but Roseburg has a distinct advantage with the VA hospital here. There is only one other veterans home in Oregon, and that's in the Dalles. |
