Rose Elementary School students, along with community members and parents, met at Eagles Park Wednesday morning to celebrate the International Walk and Bike to School Day.

Buses dropped off students at Eagles Park to start the event, and the entire school walked to Rose Elementary.

Principal Tim Wilson says he wants to encourage kids to walk or ride their bike to school more often, as it promotes good healthy habits. "To talk to the kids about being a part of the neighborhood, about eating healthy and to exercise."

Dr. Bob Dannenhoffer, along with Mayor Larry Rich and City Manager Eric Swanson spoke at an assembly at the school.

Dannenhoffer stresses how important it is for kids to stay active. "Activity is really important for kids. It gives them a chance to exercise, it gives them a chance to stay in shape and it's a chance for them to control their weight. As we know, more and more kids are getting heavy these days, and walking is one of the those great activities that can help use calories and help them maintain a healthy weight."

The physicians of Douglas County and KPIC were big sponsors for the event and D.C.I.P.A. donated green hats for the students to wear.

Wilson is hoping this event will encourage students to walk to school and stay active in their daily lives.
