Bayliner in Roseburg closing sooner than expected, eliminating 175 jobs
By KVAL Web StaffROSEBURG, Ore. -- A boat manufacturing plant in Roseburg, Ore., will close by the end of the year, eliminating 175 jobs. Brunswick Corporation today announced accelerated plans to close the Roseburg Bayliner plant and two others, and mothball a fourth plant, eliminating 1,450 jobs nationwide. “We are living and working in the most turbulent economic times in recent history,” said Brunswick Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dustan E. McCoy. “The poor economy and the accompanying weak consumer sentiment have pressured marine markets, eroding the demand for boats and engines these past few months at a swifter pace than originally anticipated." Production at the Roseburg plant and plants in Arlington, Wash., and Pipestone, Minn., will be transfered to plants near Knoxville, Tenn. Those plants will close Oct. 27 for the remainder of 2008 to facilitate the transfer. A fourth plant in Navassa, N.C., will be mothballed. Brunswick had planned to close the plants in early 2009 but accelerated the process in response to market conditions, according to the company.
