ROSEBURG, Ore. -- With the presidential election capturing the national spotlight, KPIC will be following the local races for you.

Rebublican Tim Freeman has easily won the race against his challenger, Democrat Harry McDermott. The latest numbers show Freeman with almost twice as many votes. Freeman, celebrating with friends and supporters at Willy D's in Roseburg last night said, "I am thrilled about the first round of numbers, and will be staying positive and celebrating throughout the night." Freeman thinks his life experience has prepared him for this new opportunity to serve the people of Oregon, although he feels he has big shoes to fill, taking over the seat vacated by newly elected County Commissioner Susan Morgan.

In another Oregon House race, incumbent Bruce Hanna is leading challenger Donald Nordin with more than 70% of the votes.

Incumbant State Senator Jeff Kruse, leading challenger Eldon Rollins says, "I kind of expected it. People of Douglas County have supported me and my work. This is just an affirmation, but quite honestly, your always nervous before you see the results. I've got some very important issues I am working on. I am working on community based mental health, some foster care work, and it's my intention to be very aggressive on those."

Rick Wesenberg, the lone candidate for Douglas County District Attorney, told KPIC that he was humbled by the experience, and that he is thankful to serve Douglas County. He told us that working with Jack Banta helped shape him and get him ready for this experience.

John Hanlin, lone candidate for Douglas County Sheriff said, "I will be more visible than maybe, the Sheriff has been in recent years. I intend to attend all of the community meetings and town hall meetings, and get an idea of what the public feels that they need from their Sheriff's Office."

In another interesting race, the citizens of Oakland are saying No to funding their own police force. The city is currently under a temporary contract with the Sutherlin Police Department to provide police services.

It also looks as if Roseburg will re-elect Mayor Larry Rich, who has a huge lead over challenger Josh Tibbetts.

It appears as though both the fire department measures in Glide and Sutherlin are being voted down.

Check back often to get the latest updates on all of the races. You can also check the Douglas County Website for results as they are released.
