Volosin files for change of venue
By Dan Bain, KPIC NewsROSEBURG, Ore. -- The man who eluded police for several months after an alleged assault in the Green District in July of last year, and who has allegedly tried to escape from the Douglas County Jail and the Oregon State Hospital, assaulted his attorney's investigator and threatened a judge, has filed for a change of venue. Karl Volosin, 28, appeared Tuesday in Judge Ronald Poole's Douglas County Circuit Courtroom Tuesday morning with his current court-appointed attorney, Don Scales. Volosin announced he was filing for a change of venue because he didn't feel he could get a fair trial in Douglas County due to all the publicity. County attorney Paul Meyer filed a motion on behalf of the jail commander Mike Root, that would require Volosin to wear a stun-belt while in the courtroom because of dangerous and excessive behavior.
The judge said he was reluctant to grant that motion, even though Volosin said he had no objection. A trial on some of the charges is set for January 27, but that may not happen, depending on whether the attorneys are ready in time. Volosin is charged with Assault, Attempt to Elude, Failure To Report as a Sex Offender, Tampering With a Witness and Failure to Appear. |
