ROSEBURG, Ore. -- In the first meeting of the new year, Douglas County commissioners elected a new chairperson for the year.

It was the first commissioner's meeting for Susan Morgan, and the board immediately elected her as chair, to run the weekly meetings among other duties.

Morgan gave up her seat as a State Representative to run for county commissioner and defeated Marilyn Kittelman, who was at the meeting Wednesday in her new role as editor of the weekly Roseburg Beacon newspaper.

Meanwhile, outgoing Chair Joe Laurance said this commission will work well together.

"We also are blessed to have competent, professional, good department heads, supported by excellent staff. We have the ability to overcome these challenges, and in fact with your help, will."

The commissioners approved three grant agreements with the Oregon Department of Transportation, that will provide funds for the purchase of replacement vehicles for the Umpqua Transit System.

The three grants totaled more than $700,000, and would help replace seven vehicles all together.
