Officers honor fallen comrades
By Megan Sweeney, KPIC NewsROSEBURG, Ore. -- A memorial ceremony was held in front of the county courthouse Tuesday morning, to honor officers who died in the line of duty. Tuesday was the annual Peace Officer Memorial Day, to remember those who've given the ultimate sacrifice. The American flag was lowered to half-staff with a 21-gun salute in memory of fallen officers. Sheriff John Hanlin, Commissioner Joe Laurance and District Attorney Rick Wesenberg spoke about the character, and what it takes to be a police officer. "It's important for us to remember brothers in law enforcement that gave the ultimate sacrifice and gave their lives in service for their communities. Once a year, it's the least that can be done to honor their memory," said Sheriff Hanlin. The ceremony was first started in the 1960's with President Kennedy and falls during the week of May 15th. Locally, different agencies have a ceremony within that time period to honor those officers who have given their lives servicing their community. Since the 1980's, four Douglas County Sheriff's Deputies have been killed in the line of duty, and one Roseburg police officer died on the job the 1959. |
