RHS students get graphic dose of reality
By Kevin Taggart, KPIC.com StaffROSEBURG, Ore. -- Students at Roseburg High School got a graphic dose of reality Thursday morning, during 'Operation Prom.' RHS Vice Principle Larry Rich and Senior Trooper Jeff Willis from the Oregon State Police, started off the presentation with a warning: If you don't feel comfortable... leave. Unlike in years past, where crashed vehicles were brought in, and actors used to demonstrate what happens in a DUII crash, a slideshow was presented, showing actual crash scenes from around the state. KPIC could not show clips from the actual slideshow due to the graphic nature, but some students said that this was a real wake up call. "I think it really was a wake up call, for our generation and the kids at our school, that making poor decisions in the long run isn't worth it, and I would hope everyone can take something from it and you know, make wise decisions this weekend," said RHS senior Chris Warren. The video started out with pictures of wrecked vehicles and news articles about the crash victims. The second part was much more graphic. The students went silent when the pictures of actual bodies at crash scenes were shown, and some had to leave the presentation. Vice-Principle Rich said that students were given the option to attend ot not, and counselors were available to talk to students if they needed. Some parents called KPIC, upset about not being notified about the presentation, but school officials say that there was a notice sent out in the orange and black newsletter with an opt-out form, that would excuse them from watching. About 10 students left during the presentation. Roseburg High's prom is this weekend, and officials are hoping that the presentation will help students remember to make wise choices, so they don't end up like the people they saw Thursday morning. |
