ROSEBURG, Ore. - Aviation enthusiasts that have a passion for flying ,displayed some of their unusual aircraft Friday afternoon at the Roseburg Airport.

The pilots are members of the local chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association, and the planes are homemade.

Many of the planes were built by the pilots themselves from kits.

Al Gerharter, a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, says the planes are made with care by the builders who take their time in putting them together

"They're home built planes, they were built in garages and assembled here at the airport," said Gerharter, who is a certified flight instructor and airline transport pilot.

Even though the planes are homemade, Gerharter says they are safe aircraft to fly. "Very safe, it depends on who is flying it of course, and what kind of experience level, but we go through all the checks that any other airplane goes through."

Many of the owners who built their own, said it took several years to finish their planes. Most can't work on them full-time, so they just do what they can, whenever they have spare minutes.

"It gives us something to do, number one," said Gerharter. "It's less expensive than a new airplane, and by the time you've built it you know the plane very, very well."

About a dozen of the planes were on display at the airport, and the pilots and owners were on hand to talk about the flying machines and the history behind them.

The pilots are always willing to talk to anyone about flying and about the planes, and the E.A.A chapter is always looking for new members.
