Semi truck fire destroys race cars
By Dan Bain KPIC NewsROSEBURG, Ore - A semi-truck fire on Interstate 5 in Roseburg early Saturday morning destroyed a semi trailer that was carrying pair of race cars and a utility vehicle. Damage is estimated at $300,000 to the trailer and vehicles. The fire started just before 1:30 a.m. near the 127 interchange in north Roseburg. Firefighters found the semi heavily involved in fire when they arrived. The trailer was loaded with two late model stock cars and a utility vehicle. Everything in the trailer was destroyed. The driver/owner of the truck, Philip Vitale, 51, of Lebanon, Ore., was not injured. Firefighters said one person did suffer minor smoke inhalation at the scene. The blaze caused a small grass fire along the shoulder of the freeway, but it was quickly extinguished and did no damage. Because of the structural damage to the trailer and the instability caused by the weight of the vehicles, the wreck was left on the roadside until salvage crews could get there, tear apart the remains and haul them away. Oregon Department of Transportation crews had traffic down to one lane for several hours on the northbound side of I-5 while crews worked on clearing the scene. The Roseburg Fire Department and Douglas County Fire District 2 responded with three units each to control the fire. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation. Most Popular |
