Highway 138 open, Williams Creek Fire nears 7,000 acresBy KPIC staffGlide, Ore. - Highway 138 east of Glide was re-opened for traffic Friday, and residents who had to evacuate last week, are being allowed to go back to their homes in the Steamboat area. The Williams Creek Fire is now at 6,950 acres and 60% contained. Fire officials said the cool weather slowed the growth of the fire, allowing crews to make good progress on the fire lines. There are now 814 firefighters working on the blaze. Containment is expected by Sunday August 16th. The highway was opened Friday afternoon, and a pilot car will guide traffic between milepost 33 and 36. Travelers can expect up to 20-minute delays and one lane traffic. Barriers have been placed at the turnouts to prevents stopping along the route. Firefighters prepared for burnout operations when weather and fuel moisture conditions permit. Fire activity is expected to increase as the temperature continues to warm and humidity drops. Snag and hazard tree removal and mop-up is continuing along the Pacific Corps power lines. Replacement power line poles will be installed with the use of Pacific Corps contracted helicopters today. Law enforcement is managing traffic and controlling speeds. Closures from the Williams Creek Fire include areas where helicopters are dipping from the North Umpqua River. The river is closed between Bogus Creek Boat Launch for three miles to Thunder Creek. The North Umpqua Trail # 1414 is closed beginning at it's junction with Cougar Trail # 1507, to the confluence of Thunder Creek and the Umpqua River.
