ROSEBUIRG, Ore. -- Douglas County Senior Services honored volunteers from all around the area with awards and a lunch at the fairgrounds on Tuesday.

Every year the group makes sure to thank everyone who volunteers in Douglas County and recognizes all they do to help their community.

Members of the community including elected officials, police, firefighters and many others were the servers for the lunch as a small token of appreciation.

County Commissioner Joe Laurance said, "We are remarkably fortunate and very grateful for so many giving so much."

Sutherlin Police Chief Mike Mahler says the Dial-A-Ride program, which gives rides to seniors, would not be possible without it's volunteers. "We don't have a taxi service, so those people and volunteers are basically making it possible for those who don't have cars or vehicles to get around town. Without them, there would be no transportation for those people at all," said Mahler.

Commissioner Laurance accepted this year's check from the volunteer services. The check represents the amount of money all of the volunteers hours are worth over the year.

Thanks to over 250,000 hours of service, the check was for $5.1 million.

Douglas County put in more volunteer hours then all of the Tri-County areas in Portland combined.
