ROSEBURG, Ore. -- The man who killed his mother and tried to kill his father and set their house on fire will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Gabe Riley, 29, pleaded guilty to aggravated murder Friday in exchange for a mandatory life sentence.

Riley's plea avoids a possible death penalty trial.

Riley is the adopted son of Craig and Lindy Riley. He was accused of killing his mother and cutting his father's throat at the Sutherlin home on the morning of March 10, 2008, before setting the house on fire.

Lindy Riley (at left) was a long time counselor at Sutherlin Middle School.

Craig Riley suffered a severe knife wound to the throat and bad burns to his arms and legs on one side of his body.

Craig Riley told police that it was Gabe Riley that was responsible.

Under the agreement, Gabe Riley will spend the rest of his life in prison with no possibility of parole.

After the hearing, Craig Riley said, "I fish for a living now, I own a lodge up in Canada and I'm looking forward to putting this behind me and getting back to doing something that I love to do and that's be on the water."

Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin spoke about the crime scene, saying, "This for me was the most shocking and upsetting crime scene that I've witnessed in the last 20 years that I've been in law enforcement."
