Weather plays havoc with Balloon festival
By Dan Bain KPIC NewsMYRTLE CREEK, Ore. -- Weather played havoc with the balloon festival this weekend in Myrtle Creek. Organizers of the Myrtle Creek Balloon Festival had to fight tough weather conditions this weekend and the balloons had to come down much sooner than they had anticipated. Friday night, gusts of wind knocked the balloons over and some were damaged. One woman was injured when a she was caught by a rope and she suffered a serious shoulder injury and had to be taken to the hospital. On Saturday morning, they were able to give several rides in the balloons before the winds again kicked up and they had to be taken down for safety. Organizer Jeff Messner says they still had a lot going on and a good turnout despite the weather problems. "We had balloon rides already, and they've come down because the winds picked up and safety is always a concern. Then, we've also got the Young Eagles, which are giving airplane rides to the younger kids trying to get them interested in aviation. And then we have food vendors and arts and crafts for the kids and just a variety of family fun items." The balloons came mostly from the Rogue Valley according to Messner, with one from the Eugene area. Organizers want to continue the event and are thinking of moving the festival into September or even August to make it longer and more fun for everybody, and to try to get better weather for the event. |
