Former teacher, coach faces sex abuse charges

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. -- A former high school teacher and varsity basketball coach faces charges he sexually abused students.

Shane Adrian Mast, 31, turned himself in to police in Cottage Grove, Ore., on a warrant for misdemeanor third degree sex abuse.

After being given a court date on the charge by Cottage Grove police, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office arrested Mast on multiple counts of third degree sex abuse and contributing to the sexual delinquency of minors.

Mast's arrest comes after a nine month investigation by the Cottage Grove Police Department, Douglas County Sheriffs Office and Oregon State Police.  Investigators said the alleged abuse took place in 2008 at the end of the school year.

Police believe Mast, a former Cottage Grove High School teacher and former varsity boys basketball coach at North Douglas High School in Drain, Ore., had inappropriate relationships with more than two female students under the age of 18 while teaching at Cottage Grove High.

Additional charges are pending at this time, police said.

Oregon Revised Statute 163.415 Sexual abuse in the third degree. (1) A person commits the crime of sexual abuse in the third degree if the person subjects another person to sexual contact and:

      (a) The victim does not consent to the sexual contact; or

      (b) The victim is incapable of consent by reason of being under 18 years of age.

      (2) Sexual abuse in the third degree is a Class A misdemeanor.
