ROSEBURG, Ore. -- The Douglas County Commissioners have appointed a new member to the planning commission after the death of Ed Stratton left a seat vacant.

The county received seven applications for the volunteer position, and they were looking for someone who's occupation would bring good ideas and knowledge to the commission.

A rancher named George Sandburg will fill out the rest of the term and will be eligible to run again once the term is up.

Commissioner Joe Laurance said of Sandburg, "Mr. George Sandburg from Sunshine Road is an honest to goodness rancher, and I think he would be a great asset to the planning commission."

Commissioner Doug Robertson says having someone with a background in agriculture will help because they understand the needs and regulations dealing with farmlands.

The commissioners also approved an extension of an agreement with ttimber companies that will pay for an extra Sheriff's deputy to patrol forest lands. "If it were not for this agreement, this would be one less patrol deputy that we would have availible, and this patrol deputy also does respond and back up other officers that are patrolling other areas throughout the county," said Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin.

Because of the agreement, the timber companies will pay to have the extra deputy on patrol, and there's no extra cost to the county.
