SUTHERLIN, Ore. -- Sutherlin residents have defeated both ballot measures they were deciding on.

They voted down a resolution that would have raised water rates that the city council had approved, and it wasn't close.

832 voted yes and there were 1,234 no votes.

They also decided they didn't want to give up the right to vote on water rate changes.

They voted that measure down by a 9-to-1 margin with 1,869 voting against it, and only 204 voting for it.

The election had about 47% turnout.
