ROSEBURG, Ore. - Oregon Attorney General John Kroger says he's working with district attorneys around the state, including Douglas County, to fight domestic violence.

Kroger was in Roseburg Monday to speak to the chamber of commerce at their monthly forum at the fairgrounds.

The state's head attorney said he's gotten together  with Douglas County District Attorney Rick Wesenberg to offer help in  prosecuting domestic violence cases. Kroger said those cases are some of the toughest to deal with, and his office will help the local agencies.

"Crime is down throughout the state, violent crime is down but these domestic violence incidents are up, so we brought on board a very experienced career domestic violence prosecutor with really two goals in mind,” said Kroger. “One is to help local district attorneys prosecute their most challenging domestic violence cases, those that result in the death or serious injury of someone."

Kroger said the prosecutor will be a good addition for counties like Douglas, which has a high incidence of domestic violence, and are short of prosecutors because of funding problems..

"I think it’s going to provide your district attorney with a little bit more front line support to handle those cases, but training is also critical,” said Kroger. “Those are very difficult cases to prosecute. Often the witnesses, who are victims are very reluctant to testify, so what we want to do, is train all the new prosecutors in the state how best to handle those cases."

Kroger told members of the Chamber of Commerce that Oregon needs to see economic growth before many of the funding problems in the state can be corrected. He added that right now, Oregon has an economic climate that is not attractive to businesses that are looking to locate here. He said that climate has to change before large corporations will consider coming to the state.
