Elementary students donate riding lawn mower to animal shelter
By KPIC-TV StaffWINCHESTER, Ore. - Cobb Street School students have been supporting the Saving GracePet Adoption Center in Winchester all year, and last week, they went a little farther in their support. Sixth, seventh and eighth graders volunteer one afternoon a month at the shelter. The science class decided to do a scrap metal drive in January, to raise funds to build agility equipment, for the dogs to use at Saving Grace.
The goal was $250 but with the help of the parents and local businesses, the kids raised over $900.
Hobi Equipment in Roseburg, gave the kids a special deal on a John Deere riding mower, so they bought it and donated it, to the shelter.
"We had a bunch of extra money so we subtracted $250 from that and it turned out we had about $600 left so we called up Saving Grace and asked what they needed and they said a riding lawn mower. So we went over to Hobi's and they had a riding lawn mower for $550 so we took it," said Sean Brennan, one of three students who organized the donation to the shelter.
The students were the driving force behind the project, and Saving Grace officials said the riding lawn mower has been much needed, for their operation. They have a large amount of grassy land they have to mow, so they are excited for the new equipment.
In the past, the staff at Saving Grace has even brought in animals from their own farms to eat down the grass, because they didn’t have the budget to buy a mower.
Shelter officials said they are thankful to the kids at Cobb Street for dedicating their time and energy to raise funds to purchase a riding lawnmower.
