Roseburg has a new weekly newspaper in the Roseburg Beacon.

The Roseburg weekly is the sixth newspaper owned by Lake Oswego businessman Erik Jonsson which include the North County News and the Winston Reporter.

Editor Jean Ivey says the new paper will fill a niche in Roseburg's news and community.

''Because we can do stories in-depth, we don't do like the spur-of-the-moment stories. In our paper, they're old news by the time it comes out, so we don't cover those things like a daily, we can't, it's old news. We just have a whole different niche.''

The Roseburg Beacon is printed on Monday nights and will be available on Tuesdays and in subscriber's mail boxes on Wednesdays.

One unique benefit to being a subscriber is the ability to submit classified ads while being an active customer for free.

''Our big deal is classified advertising is free to our subscribers. So if you pay 22 dollars a year for a subscription, you can put your garage sales in all year'', Ivey said.

The new office for the Roseburg Beacon is in the former Johnson Hearing Aid store on the corner of Main and Washington in downtown Roseburg and their phone number is 762-2222.
