ROSEBURG, Ore. - Roseburg Forest Products announced plans to lay off 70 workers and more layoffs are possible this winter as the company copes with decreased demand for wood products.

Company officials cut the graveyard shift, which accounts for all of the layoffs. The plant will now operate on two shifts a day.

Officials wouldn't talk to KPIC News on camera but said the economy is to blame for lagging sales.

Vice president Hank Snow said the low number of new houses being built and down sales in furniture are the reason business is bad.

If things don't turn around soon, Snow said there could be more layoffs coming this winter.

The plant will try to prevent some of the job cuts by moving skilled workers to other mills.
