File photo. By Associated PressBEND, Ore. (AP) - Les Schwab Tire Centers is gathering Oregon political support in its effort to stop curbs on tires from China. The United Steelworkers has asked the International Trade Commission to limit Chinese imports. Les Schwab and other retailers say U.S. manufacturers aren't making the cheaper tires popular with today's cash-strapped motorists. Republican Rep. Greg Walden of Eastern Oregon has written to the commission opposing a Chinese tire quota. Spokeswomen for Democratic Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley say their offices are drafting letters on behalf of Les Schwab. Democratic Rep. Peter DeFazio of Springfield supports the union, however, arguing that cheap goods come from low-wage plants with hazardous working conditions. Schwab is based in Bend. |
