ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Parking in downtown Roseburg is going to change.
In the past, parking compliance issues were handled by Diamond Parking.
But some business owners say that customers were being scared away by the threat of a ticket.
So, during Monday night's city council meeting, councilors voted to hand parking enforcement over to the Downtown Roseburg Association (DRA).
Officials with the DRA say they won't be as strict with parking issues as the former company. Gary Leif, the DRA Board Vice Chairman, says that strict parking enforcement just shouldn't happen. "Customers should never get tickets coming in to downtown," said Leif. "They should get warnings, nice little friendly reminders. But it should be a friendly warning, we want them to come here and stay here."
Leif believes that the lighter restrictions will make it more attractive for people to shop at downtown businesses and will help the local economy.
The DRA will be taking over parking in November.
