New stores: 'They're going to bring people back to the mall'

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Officials say the Roseburg Valley Mall is going from "drab to fab" with the new stores coming in.
Gone is the familiar Sears entrance, and in it's place: rue 21. The clothing store has opened in the mall, across from the Tom Tom Restaurant.
A mall spokesperson also says a Marshalls will be here in the next few months.
They say the businesses will do a lot for the community. "They're going to bring people back to the mall and give them a reason to shop again," said Andrea Gagnon, the Roseburg Valley Mall Operations Manager. "It's going to keep people here and able to shop in Roseburg versus spending the gas to drive an hour and a half away."
Gagnon says in the old Sears portion of the mall, people can expect five new businesses.
She says there will also be a sign on the corner of Garden Valley and Stewart Parkway, showcasing upcoming events and sales.

Thanks for the comment Rick. While there are jobs created, there are more displaced than created. The jobs created are easy to identify, those that are displaced aren't easy to identify. At the end of the day, if it isn't economically advantageous for a corporation to place a store here, they won't. In order to be economically advantageous for the corporation, it has to extract more money from the area than it provides. My viewpoint for this discussion is rather basic as you can see, yes there are other factors to consider, but the research has been done, and it overwhelmingly favors spending money in locally owned businesses to create a positive economic impact. In order to create a better standard of living for everyone in the area, we need to bring in more money than we send out. There are things that we should purchase from outside our area, and I don't mean to leave anyone with the opinion that we should only shop local, or that there aren't things local business should be doing that they aren't, it is just a different discussion.
Tim, not all of the money goes out of town. There is some job creation with the opening of these stores. Yes, they're service industry jobs, but jobs nevertheless. I understand what you said about much higher paying jobs, but there are too many things in Douglas County that make those jobs almost impossible to bring here. Lack of education, flat population, high poverty numbers, drug issues...I think you know where I am going.
Some store more suited for middle age and older folks. Not Hollywood teeny boppers.
So we should make it easier to send our money and jobs out of town? I don't understand..... How does it help the local economy when we place an ATM in reverse in the mall that takes our money and sends it out of town?

But a Chuck E Cheese for kids would be awesome too. Even when we have no money we find ways to do things with our kids!
Target would be a bonus, but I think we are not shopping because none of us can find jobs that pay enough to buy more than necesseties.
Trader Joe's, and Target is a good place to start!
As long as the people in charge keep fighting change than Roseburg will not grow and get good stores like Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Target, etc. Look at how long it took to get a Costco!
Hmmmmmmm I would definitely say either Hot Topic or Suncoast :) I miss that store :)
An Olive Garden restaurant would be nice, with an Outback right next to it.
Victorias secret!
Kohl's
Bsth and body. Old navy. Target
Maybe if there was access into the mall from the store! It's not going to do what you hope by not giving access into the mall.
The mall has already had a footlocker and it closed. I just hope that the stores they open give us a reason to shop here and not have to go to Eugene for decent stores and selections.
Target!!! Marshall's or Kohls or Old Navy..Anything to not have to shop at Walmart, I hate Walmart. Maybe, bring the Foot Locker back. I miss that store!
Hey I was there just the other day! Lol
