If it's water-based latex paint and you live in King, Pierce or Snohomish counties, you can put it in the trash.

"Because it's not a hazardous substance," says Tom Watson, King County's eco-consumer.

Watson says you need to properly prepare that old latex paint before you put it in the trash by solidifying it with paint hardener or kitty litter.

"You can put it in a plastic - say, inside a low box - and just dump it in there, one part kitty litter to one part latex, and then just bag it up when it's hardened and put it in the garbage."

What if you do the hardening in the can?

"Then you need to leave the lid off so the garbage collector sees that it's not liquid paint, because they don't want to pick up liquid," Watson said.

Remember, this is only for latex paint -- the kind you clean up with water.

"Any non-latex paints and stains and solvents still need to go to the household hazardous waste program," said Watson.
