Bump Keys: a growing problem

Bump Keys: a growing problem

By Lindsey Kovacevich

Your home may not be as protected as you think, and your family could be at risk to predators. It has been reported in the media about a simple way unwanted visitors can get into your home.

It's called a bump key.

This device can be bought online and can even be homemade. It's all over the Internet, and there are Web sites that show you just how to make this key.

The key works by having all its notches the same height.

Ron Moore explains how these bump keys work.

"One notch, you apply pressure with the bottom of your thumb and your forefinger and you just tap that, and what happens is that the pins all go upwards and it just unlocks your door almost instantly," he said.

For seniors, those who live alone and even families, this bump key is a serious problem and could have unfortunate consequences.

Numerous sites online show TV reporters and even children using the bump key and getting into homes without much effort.

Ron Moore and his wife Melinda have come up with a device to prevent intruders and even those people who have a spare key like landlords from getting into your home.

The Super Grip Lock is a piece of Velcro strap that attaches your dead bolt and your doorknob together.

"It has a pocket that allows it to fit on nearly every deadbolt in the marketplace. So you just turn your deadbolt to the locked position, put your elastic pocket to the tip of the deadbolt and then you wrap it around once around the deadbolt handle keeping your fabric tight. Underneath the doorknob press it together and now that handle can no longer go backwards, and no one can unlock your door even if they have your key."

This is one way to keep yourself and others safe and really it could save a life.

Another option is to purchase a lock such as a Medeco lock which is bump resistant.

There is always security issues to tackle, but knowing how to fight back is the key to staying safe.
