Waiting no longer the best bet for cheap hotel rates

When it comes to getting a great hotel rate, seasoned travelers know what to do: wait till the last minute.

"But the exact opposite thing is happening now," says Bob Diener, co-founder of the site www.GetaRoom.com.

He says wait too long and you could be in for a costly surprise.

"There is more demand, cities are getting busier, hotels are getting filled up and they are raising rates a lot closer to check in."

This is especially true in big cities such as New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston and Washington, D.C.

"Those are some of the destinations where it's getting very busy and hotels are filling up and rates are rising dramatically close to check-in. So if you see a good deal, lock it in."

I made that mistake a few weeks ago. By waiting too long, the room I wanted in D.C. jumped from $196 to $295.

"If you can book out a month or even six weeks or eight weeks you're probably going to find your best deals," Diener says.

Check the calendar -- if you're going away fo the holidays, you should be booking your hotel rooms now.

If you're looking for hotel deals, Diener says consider these three cities: Las Vegas, New Orleans and Orlando.
