Do face serums really work?

For its May issue, Consumer Reports put a number of serum treatments to the test. "We recruited 79 participants and al of them are between the ages of 40 and 65," says Jamie Hirsh, associate health editor at the magazine. Hirsh says the test lasted six weeks. "When we see reductions in the length of depth of wrinkles, they were subtle at best. They certainly fell short of the miracles that the product labels seemed to imply." Hirsh says two products rated slightly higher than the rest: DermaSilk 5 Minute Face Lift ($40 per ounce) and Neutrogena Ageless Intensives Deep Wrinkle ($20 per ounce). Like skin creams, some of these products can make your skin look a little better simply by moisturizing it. But this is not a permanent change. Consumer Reports says to see dramatic improvements in wrinkles you'll need to see a dermatologist for a prescription product, not something you can buy over the counter.
