ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Americans downed one of the biggest meals of the year last week, and we're now in the middle of a season that offers sweets and treats at every turn.

Doctors told KPIC News that it's important to keep active during the holidays.

For many, holidays are centered around food. Getting together for big meals, baking your favorite holiday treats and letting yourself indulge a little bit.

But while you're downing the calories, officials urge you to keep up your exercise routine. Dr. Jennifer Micek, a family practice physician, says you shouldn't slack off on the exercise during the busy holiday season. "Exercise yes, is very important all year round, and especially when we start eating more," she said.

Doctor Micek says that many people make new years resolutions to get fit, but she advises starting health regimens now.

Even though fatty foods seem to prevail this time of year, she recommends having a fruit or vegetable with every meal.

That way, you can still indulge a little bit, but you're also swapping out some high calorie foods for something a little more nutritious.
