Recent fires show importance of renter's insurance
By Glen Beeby KPIC NewsROSEBURG, Ore. -- The recent fires involving the apartment complex in Winchester and a rental home in Canyonville, have brought up the importance of having renter's insurance. Most of the people affected by those fires last month did not have renter's insurance, so all of their property loss had to come out of their own pocket. Many tenants think their landlord's insurance policy will cover them in an emergency, but Farmers Agent Eric Thoreson tells KPIC News that isn't the case. "It will cover the building itself, and no property or renter's personal belongings. So, that is a huge misconception, is that it's covered under someone else's policy, and it's not." Renters insurance will cover a person's property even if another tenant in the building caused the damage. Because people get covered for a certain amount of property, there is no appraisal needed so people can get a policy faster. "A person says, "I have $10,000 worth of stuff," that's what we write the policy on. We write it to cover $10,000 worth of personal property. But, as far as cost goes, it can be as little, and I've quoted one recently, that was as low as $9 a month." Thoreson says that dollar for dollar, renter's insurance is the best, considering the price you pay and how much coverage you get. Another way people can save on their insurance is to talk with their agent about bundling it with other services, like their car. |
