River Ranch hopes to produce local olive oil
By Glen Beeby KPIC NewsGLIDE, Ore. -- Douglas County now has it's first olive farm, which will produce cooking oil locally. The River Ranch in Glide recently planted several acres of land with new olive trees. Owner Mel Otis says they researched several crops and found olives to be an untapped resource in the United States. "We think it is the 21st century gold rush. It has a short maturity life, it comes to market very quickly, in three to four years we will be producing olive oil," said Otis. Several members of the community came out to the ranch to celebrate the start of the new business. Otis hopes to popularize olive farming as a major industry in this area. "95% of the oil that we use in the United States is imported they tell me, so I think it would be a marvelous thing if we could produce oil without importing it." The ranch is already employing people to make sure the olives are growing properly. Once they start producing oil they will be able to hire several more workers. For now, Otis has his employees working on the name and logo for the olive oil. Most Popular |
