Two new cheetahs born at Wildlife Safari
By Kat Wolcott KPIC NewsWINSTON, Ore. -- The Wildlife Safari in Winston has a couple new faces. Liz the cheetah gave birth to two cubs early Monday morning. The cubs are in quarantine until 72 hours after their birth, not even employees have seen the newborns in person. Officials at the park say that both mom and babies are doing just fine. "They are healthy, they are very energetic, they're squirming all around, nursing off mom, crawling all over her belly," said Sarah Roy, the cheetah supervisor. "She couldn't be more attentive, she's constantly grooming them and nudging them back towards her. She's barely left the den, she's gone out for maybe five minutes at a time." Monitoring the cubs is a huge job: someone is watching the them on-screen 24 hours a day and logging all of their movements. The birth of the two cubs is a huge advancement for the cheetah population. Cheetahs are already low in numbers, but it's incredibly difficult to breed cheetahs in captivity, so every birth helps. The babies aren't named yet, but a poll on facebook is trying to gauge what friends of the Wildlife Safari want the names to be. In the running: Nor, Nahallee, Chimba and Azeeza. If you want to vote on what you think the cubs should be named, you can add the Wildlife Safari on Facebook and take part in the poll. |
