Golfers hit Roseburg course for a cause
By Dan Bain KPIC NewsROSEBURG, Ore. -- Dozens of golfers and non-golfers were on the Roseburg Country Club course on Thursday, to raise money for the Greater Douglas United Way fundraising campaign. It was their 24th annual golf tournament that raises money for the three dozen agencies supported by the United Way in the county. The campaign kicked off this month with a goal of more than $880,000. Deb Young, the finance and resource manager for the United Way, says the event raises about $10,000 each year. "It goes directly to the agencies, over and above the cost of the tournament," said Young. "So, it's the last benefit tournament of the season, so we think it's important to get out here and play and have fun and start the campaign off right." This year, golfers could buy a ball that was numbered and put into a bag. Firemen hoisted the balls to the top of their fire truck ladder and dumped them on the putting green, scattering them in every direction, with the closest to the hole winning cash prizes. One ball actually went in one of the two cups for a $250 prize. There were lots of different contests around the course, with chipping events, darts and many other creative competitions. There were about 25 teams in this year's tournament, and its all to support the member agencies who are funded by the United Way. |
