12-year-old girl arrested after 'shooting' text

MYRTLE CREEK, Ore. -- A 12-year-old student at Coffenberry Middle School was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, after she allegedly generated a text about a shooting.
Police say that they were contacted by officials from the school at 1:15 p.m., after they were shown a text message that said, "there is going to be a shooting tomorrow."
Police say after an investigation, they discovered that the girl had sent the message to herself.
She was arrested and charged with first degree disorderly conduct, which is a Class A Misdemeanor.
The girl was cited and released to her mother.
Seriously, we are going to arrest a 12 year old for saying/writing something that was clearly a bad choice but hardly criminal.
Should spend the resources on actual crimes the pendulum has swung completely to the illogical side
I have to agree with Stephanie Price-Slay! Our kids are our most prized possession, my kids dont go to that school but i did and Im glad the school is taking action on this instead of sweeping it under the rug!! All of these rumors about shootings are are not funny after what just happened to those 20 innocent kindergartners!!
With the "end of the world" happening tomorrow, the recent tragedy in a small-town elementary school in CT, and now this incident...both of my children will be staying home tomorrow. I'm granting them an extra day's vacation and granting myself the peace of mind I've lacked every day I've sent them to school this week. I'm really concerned about what crazy people may feel it's okay to do on the day when they think the world is ending anyway!
OMG thats so sad....
She did text her self but showed it to others and then a staff member got told about it and she got it trouble for it. SCHOOL ZONES ARE A NO TOLERANCE ZONE! I am glad to see the school took the right precautions and its too bad that she did get in trouble for it but maybe next time she will think before she does it. It does say she was cited and released

that seems most likely, but why doesn't it just say that, why leave the ambiguity? It says 'they were shown', rather than 'she showed them'. The way the report reads she could have just as well been pretending to be psychic, or testing to see if she was psychic, or who knows.
She showed the text to the school saying someone sent it to her...later the police found that she sent it to herself.
She is old enough to know better....a threat is a threat..its scary that these kids even threaten others. It is not a joke at all there is nothing funny about shooting anybody
I appreciate the school and officials taking any threat, pretend or otherwise as serious as this. You same people complaining, what would you be saying if there was a shooting and "signs" were ignored? There have been way too many rumors in schools all over about possible shootings and unless the ones starting them are punished it will continue and it will continue to disrupt the students, parents, staff and administration. And the threat was circulating around this school, over an hour and a half before the authorities were called (according to the article) my own child had texted me that he heard rumors of a threat. Our children do not need to be living under that stress. Thoughtless is an appropriate word to describe her actions, but it will now cause others to be more thoughtful in their jokes.
Glad the authorities are puting a stop to this. This entire threat of killing others has gotten way out of hand. How are we supposed to know if they are serious or not? Thank you MC police.
@Missie Vian Walker It wasn't a threat, it was mishandled evidence courtesy of the Myrtle Creek Police Department. So taking something out of context makes you sound like a sheltered bible thumper.
As a concerned parent of a child that goes to this school I have this to say: No text message, spoken word, email, or letter of any kind that pertains to violence of this kind should be tolerated. Every situation should be treated as a potential threat. I don't give a rip how old the girl is,or if it's her fault, or her parent's fault, or society's fault. Thurston high school, Columbine high school, and most recently the shooting in Connecticut that left 26 dead! The thought is in the back of my mind almost every day when I send my most prized possessions to school. Good for Coffenberry for taking those actions, they finally got something right!!!
Annnnddddddddd we've already gone too far.
Obviously she sent the text to herself, probably saving it as a different number, and then started showing other people and making a big deal about it to get attention. Should she get arrested? In my opinion that's a little harsh but of course school officials got a hold of her phone. I'm sure a teacher over heard about it and reported it to the office because it can be a very dangerous situation. if she was playing the victim they obviously wanted to find out who sent it to her; then realized it was sent from her own phone. Looks like she was just looking for attention or possibly a way to get out of school. She's not stupid. She's a pre-teen who made a poor decision and yes should be punished for it, but in a more appropriate way.
i think that she must have SHOWED the text to someone, claiming she recieved it, as it says it was discovered she sent the trxt to HERSELF. i dont think the crime was in the context of the text but the manner it was delievered.
Nip it in the bud and the rest will get the message. Nothing like this is treated lightly anymore in the light of all the incidents that have been happening, 12 or 21 doesn't matter.
MORAL: Careful what you say when you're talking to yourself. Others may be reading your messages. ;) hahaha
this is asinine, why is the school reading her text messages? Anybody else notice that tomorrow is also DUN, DUN, DUN, the end of the world? Maybe she's just sending herself a note for some story she planned to write. Stafford's right, if I send a death threat to myself who cares?
I think the news story is trying to say she started the rumor after reading again. My opinions still stand though.
She was being irresponsible and stupid. Spreading a rumor... guess I don't think that's deserving of too much punishment. Its not a joke and she should be ashamed but it was a cry for attention maybe we should look to her parents for an answer of why their child would feel the need to do something so stupid???
She is a child!!! Nobody should be calling her a little brat starving for attention and if she is starving for attention, is that her fault! No! Absolutely not! Children need help and guidance from us adults!
The right people will read my comments carefully and understand. The rest are just victims of their own ignorance.
what i would like to know is if this was her making a threat or was she sending this to a friend because its something that she heard??
Pay close attention. You're government is closing in on the very rights that made America so unique. You're giving them up willingly. Hope you're happy!
Why is it a crime to say "there will be a shooting tomorrow"? Am I going to be arrested now? All you people are small minded nitwits. What happen to freeness of speech? She sent it to herself? How is that a crime? You're the morons. Don't say the word shooting. You'll be arrested! And then we'll all publicly mock you for being so dumb. Stupid Americans.
what is this world coming to
omg this little gal needs to be strictly disciplined. She is old enough to know better.
What a stupid girl sorry if thats harsh but thats old enough to know better.
Wow.. is she wanting attention... well she got it but not good for her.. and my 12 yr old has a cell phone. She walks home from school and I want to make sure she is safe.. also hers has a gps in it and yes I use it.. schools are not safe anymore...
Why do kids think this is funny?????
why does a 12 yr old need a cell phone at school
Glad they are punishing her. Just hope they remember shes only 12 and the punishment can easily be taken to far.
