KPIC guarantees win in Donkey Basketball rematch

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- After letting the Douglas County News win last year for the annual Shriners fundraiser, KPIC staff have decided, "No more Mr. Nice Donkey."

The big game tips off at 2:00 p.m. at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on Saturday.

This is the third year that KPIC has participated, and all the money raised from the event goes to the Douglas County Shrine Club. The Shriners perform many services for children in our area.

Head Coach and KPIC Webmaster Kevin Taggart says that he has his team ready to go, and isn't going to play nice this year. "Last year, those people at the Douglas County News showed up wearing t-shirts featuring a news headline declaring victory before the game even started," he said. "Myself and our team, being the good sports that we are, felt bad that they had spent the money to make all those shirts up, so we decided to let them win."

KPIC brings a young team to the "court" this weekend, with only two returning starters, but they have been working hard on their skills in the off season, and even the rookies are confident for a big win.

Rookie forward and KPIC reporter Kat Wolcott says the competition this year really doesn't look that difficult. "They write a newspaper. They don't even carry big cameras around, so we definitely have the edge. I am looking forward to strapping on a donkey and showing them who is boss."

Returning starter and KPIC reporter Glen Beeby says that if they can keep the Douglas County News from cheating again this year, they should fare well. "They brought in an entire team of ringers last year, so, whatever." Beeby has been particularly quiet this year, as most media members feel he was upset with the coach's decision last year to let DC News win.

"It's all good now, coach told us he is not going to hold us back this year," said Beeby. "We will win."

The public is encouraged to come out and watch what Taggart called, "The biggest beatdown of a small town newspaper staff you have ever seen."

The game starts at 2:00 p.m. sharp at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on Saturday.
