Man falls 300 feet down caldera at Crater Lake

CRATER LAKE, Ore. -- A 27-year-old man visiting from New York had to be rescued after falling into the caldera at Crater Lake.

Park rangers said that just before 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Eric Brimlow, 27, of Syracuse, went beyond a barrier and onto a snow bank before falling.

Witnesses said he slid head-first down a steep snow shoot before coming to rest 300 feet below.

Rangers deployed their high-angle rescue unit, and nearly 50 people took part in trying to get to the man out.

It took almost six hours to get him up and out of the caldera, and he was taken by helicopter to Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford with serious injuries.

His current condition has been upgraded from critical to serious

Officials want to remind people to be safe while visiting the park and always stay behind the barriers.
