EUGENE, Ore. - Rep. Peter DeFazio said the only positive to come out of the debt vote was the standing ovation for his wounded House friend, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona.
"It's a miracle but it's hard, it's hard," the Springfield Democrat said. "It's obviously hard for her, and it's hard for those of us who knew her before."
As for everything else, the congressman's body language made it clear without him having to put his feelings in words.
"We did not do good for our country with that vote," DeFazio said.
DeFazio is not happy with the deal to raise the nation's debt ceiling by $2 trillion.
"I would say we have a bipartisan failure of leadership in the Congress," he said. "Does not give me any confidence."
Including a lack of confidence in President Obama.
"We need to put people back to work. What's Obama's answer? Three more job-killing trade agreements. Patent reform?"
Job losses that again have hit close to home at Monaco Coach.
"Well, it's a horrible blow to lose 450 good wage, manufacturing jobs," he said. "We have the economy that tax cuts give us. It's not putting anybody to work. We need investment."
Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Springfield, on ...
Gabby Giffords and her return to the floor to vote on debt ceiling:
"It's a miracle but it's hard; it's hard. It's obviously hard for her and it's hard for those of us who knew her before. To tell the truth it was kind ofd a shock. It was the first time I had seen her, and she's got a long ways to go."
"Well it's a horrible blow to lose 450 good wage manufacturing jobs. It really doesn't have anything to do with us locally. We have a good, strong workforce. That's not it. They're concentrating all of their operations in one place."
On just completed debt ceiling vote:
"We did not do good for our country with that vote. We didn't meaningfully address our long term deficit problems."
On the next step - the super committee of senators - DeFazio says he's nervous that all this dealing will happen behind closed doors. "I would say we have a bi-partisan failure of leadership in the Congress," he said. "Does not give me any confidence."
Jobs, jobs, jobs:
DeFazio says the economy of tax cuts has failed: "We have the economy that tax cuts give us. It's not putting anybody to work. We need investment. The president talks about investment, but he never delivers and he never pushes and he never fights."
