Sheriff gets more money for BLM patrols
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is getting more money from the Bureau of Land Management for patrolling their lands in the county.
Sheriff John Hanlin told county commissioners that the BLM Is adding $32,000 to help fund the deputy to patrol their lands. "An amendment to our BLM contract which provides funding for our two deputies that patrol in the BLM lands," said Hanlin. "This was additional money that our local BLM ranger secured from the BLM out of Salem, so it will essentially help extend that BLM program."
Hanlin told commissioners the Sheriff's office is also extending the current contract with the state to house state inmates in the county jail.
Hanlin says the county has 58 beds that it rents out to the state to house the inmates that would otherwise have been sent to the state penitentiary. The state pays the county just over $73 per bed per day for the service.
