DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- If you're taking garbage to the landfill, you will find new hours starting in November.
County Public Works officials say the winter hours go into effect Wednesday at the Roseburg landfill, which is the next day the facility is open.
The new hours will be from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
County Public Works Director Robb Paul says that will keep most of the activity during the daylight hours at the landfill site. "We switch to winter hours November 1, but actually the landfill is closed on Tuesday, so actually November 2," Paul said. "We're switching back to Standard Time from Daylight Savings Time, so it'll be dark earlier in the evening and a lot of our sites to not have a lot of lighting."
Paul says people are starting to get used to the cutbacks that were made necessary because of the reduction in federal money from the Safety Net.
He says if the federal legislation is not renewed for next year, they're looking at much deeper cuts. "If the Safety Net doesn't get extended, this year is the last year to receive money for that," he said. "So, next year we would receive no money and we would have to pay for a $2.5 million operation out there somehow. Either we further reduce hours or we start charging, one of the two."
The new hours also apply at the Oakland, Glide, Myrtle Creek, Canyonville and Reedsport transfer sites.
