Roseburg women to walk for breast cancer
By Dan Bain
ROSEBURG - Some Roseburg women are getting ready for a long walk to raise money to fight cancer.
The women have been preparing for the 60-mile Susan G.Komen Walk late this summer in Seattle. They have a goal of $22-hundred apiece, and they'll be out in the community trying to get people to donate to the walk. Ronna Salerno, one of the organizers, said they got involved in the walk because breast cancer has touched so many lives. "I don't know of anyone who doesn't know someone who's had it or survived from it, so it's a good cause. It's hard to work for it and train for it and everything, but still it was important because people with cancer can't stop because it's hard. So it keeps up going and that's what made me want to do it," said Salerno. The group already has several things planned to help raise money for the event. "We are going to start putting posters up, sending out mailings to local businesses and we're going to have a big garage sale in June, and any way we can think of to raise money. We have an account set up at Cascade Community Credit Union under thanks for the Mammories." They are also selling small items to help raise the money they need, and to try to make people aware of the disease at the same time, and to encourage preventative measures. The team goes to Seattle September 12-14, to walk 20 miles a day for three days, and it's all in the name of fighting breast cancer. |
